CAF CC: Abdu Lumala’s Pyramids draws Zambia’s Zanaco in quarter finals

CAF Confederations Cup debutants Pyramids FC will seek to reach the semi finals of the competition at their first time of asking when they take on Zambian side Zanaco FC in the quarter finals of the tournament.

The draws for the Total CAF Confederations Cup quarter finals was held on Tuesday, February 5, at the Hilton Pyramids Golf in Cairo, Egypt.  

Pyramids FC, home to Uganda’s electric winger Abdu Lumala reached this stage after topping their Group A, they amassed five victories and one draw in the group stages.

Zanaco who reached the group stages for the first time since 2010, managed to scrape past the group stages, qualifying via goal difference after they were tied on points with Motema Pembe.

Moroccan side RS Berkane who finished runners up to eventual winners Zamalek in 2019 will want to go one better this time around.

But they have to navigate past a tricky quarterfinal clash over Egyptian side Al Masry.

The Egyptian side who finished second in Group A, have history on their side as they have progressed to the quarter finals in each of the last three editions they have played in the quarter finals in 1999, 2002 and as recent as 2018.

Proline FC conquerors Al Nasr Benghazi, qualified second on goal difference from Group B were drawn against Group D winners Hassania Agadir.  

This is the first time they have reached the Confederations Cup quarter finals. While the Moroccan side Hassania was knocked out at this stage by champions Zamalek.

Nigerian giants Enyimba International FC will face fellow North African side Horoya FC from Guinea.

Enyimba qualified after finishing second in Group D, while Horoya topped Group B with 14 points, the second-highest points tally in the groups.

Enyimba are back to back winners of the CAF Champions League in 2003 and 2004, while their best Confederations Cup finish came in 2018, as they were knocked out by 2018 winners Enyimba in the semi-finals.

Horoya has been dominant on the continent recently, reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League in 2018 and 2019.

They have also won this tournament in 1978, then called the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup, before it was merged to form the Confederations Cup.

The quarter finals are due to be played between March 1st for the first leg, and March 8th for the second leg.

The draw was conducted by the CAF Competitions Director Samson Adamu, with the assistance of former DR Congo forward Shabani Nonda and retired Ivorian defensive midfielder Didier Zokora.
