CAF CC: All or nothing part II, KCCA out to seal group stage qualification

By Shafic Kiyaga

Kampala Capital City Authority Football club (KCCA FC) will be out to seal qualification to the CAF Confederations Cup group stages, when they visit Algerian side Paradou FC on Sunday at Stade du Juillet 1962 in Algiers, Algeria.

Ahead of the first leg of the encounter at Lugogo, KCCA FC manager Mike Hillary Mutebi christened the tie as ‘all or nothing’ as his side seek to make a return to the group stages since 2018.

Both sides played to a goalless draw in the first leg and therefore head into the second leg with all to play for.

Failure to make it to the group stages of the CAF Champions League, caused grave damage in the camp, as KCCA FC failed to win any of their next three games in all competitions. And Mutebi concedes that his side cannot afford another failure on the continent.

“We need to go head into the game with a winning mentality, because failure to make it to the group stages of either the Champions league or Confederations Cup constitutes a failure on our side,” Mutebi said during the press conference on Thursday before the team departed.

“Therefore, we are going to Algeria to try win the game and get the result we want. It’s a tricky game for us given the goalless draw in Kampala,” he added.

The first leg was a show of good tactical work in the first leg, as both sides emphasized and stuck by their approach, with KCCA looking to play their way in behind the Paradou defence, while Paradou depended on the counterattacks.

The Algerian outfit looked dangerous and could have left Kampala with the advantage, but Lukwago managed to pull off a couple saves on the day.

In the second leg however, Paradou will have to open up a bit more as the onus will be on them to try and force a result.

Playmaker Allan Okello and defender Mustafa Kiiza were doubts ahead of the game, but were included on the team that made the trip to Algiers.

A win for either side will see them through to the group stages, while a scoring draw will see KCCA progress on away goals rule. A goalless draw will push the game into penalties.
