CAF CC Wrap: Aucho, Yanga hit Group Stages at enemy territory

Uganda Cranes deputy skipper Khalid Aucho played 67 minutes as his side, Young Africans SC managed a huge 1-0 victory over heavyweights Club Africain in the CAF Confederation Cup on Wednesday.

Stephane Aziz Ki netted in the 79th minute at the Stade Olympique de Rades, to help Yanga advance to the competition’s group stages via a 1-0 aggregate, at the expense of the Tunisians.

The success followed their initial barren stalemate in the first leg played over a week back at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, Uganda Cranes star Allan Kateregga’s side St Eloi Lupopo eliminated Burkina Faso’s Kadiogo FC via a 2-0 aggregate. The Democratic Republic of Congo side won both legs by 1-0 each.

In the other fixtures, Future FC who eliminated Uganda’s BUL FC in the first preliminary round advanced to the group stages after a 3-2 penalty shootout victory over De Agosto. They had locked at 2-2 on aggregate after two legs.

Nigeria’s Rivers United made it through to the groups after an impressive 6-1 aggregate victory over Libya’s Al Nasr. After beating the latter 5-0 in the first leg, Rivers managed a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Tunisia’s Monastir edged Morocco’s Berkane 1-0 on aggregate to advance. The Tunisians had won the first leg by the mentioned scoreline before grinding out a barren draw in the second on Wednesday.

On the other hand, Moroccan side FAR Rabat needed a second leg 4-0 thrashing of Mali’s Djoliba to progress, as the first had ended goalless.

Further, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Motema Pembe advanced courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate win over Burundi’s Flambeau du Centre. The Congolese won 2-0 and 2-1 in the first and second legs respectively.

Egyptian outfit Pyramids FC eliminated Niger’s Nigelec after a 3-1 aggregate. The former overcame a first-leg 1-0 loss to come back and win 3-0 on home soil on Wednesday.

Also, DRC’s TP Mazembe needed a 3-0 aggregate victory to dump out South Africa’s Royal AM. The former won both legs 2-0 at home and 1-0 in Durban yesterday.

Another South African side, Cape Town City was eliminated, this time by an Algerian team USM Alger. The latter won 1-0 away on Wednesday to advance by the same scoreline. The first leg had ended in a barren stalemate.

Mali’s Real Bamako needed a 4-2 aggregate to see off Eswatini outfit Royal Leopards. After finishing 1-1 in Mbabane, the Malians returned on home soil on Wednesday to win 3-1.

Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas stormed the groups at the expense of another Ivorian side Sporting Gagnoa courtesy of a 5-2 aggregate.

Congo Brazzaville’s Diables Noirs ejected Seychelles’ La Passe over a 6-2 aggregate win. The latter capped their first leg 2-0 win with another 4-2 victory to progress.

After a 4-4 aggregate over two legs, Libya’s Al-Akhdar advanced on away goals rule at the expense of Nigeria’s Plateau United. The latter had won 4-1 at home in the first meeting before the former returned to win 3-0.

Kara from Togo dumped out CS Sfaxien via a narrow 2-1 aggregate. Following the latter’s win over the same scoreline in the first leg, they held the Tunisians to a barren draw in the second to advance.

To cap the playoffs, South African side Marumo Gallants FC advanced courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate win over Libya’s Al Ahly Tripoli.

The former came back from a 1-0 first-leg loss to win 3-0 at home and storm the coveted group stages.
