The CAF Champions League is certainly not for the faint hearted, this after five time winners TP Mazembe were condemned to a 2-0 away defeat to Raja Casablanca in Morocco in the quarterfinal first leg tie played on Friday evening.
The White Ravens who had Uganda Cranes left back Joseph Ochaya play the entire game conceded after just six minutes from a corner.
Former TP Mazembe striker Ben Malango Ngita rose highest to nod home, sending the capacity crowd at the Complex Sportive Mohammed V into wild celebrations.
Mazembe tried to build play going forward but the Green Eagles foiled every attempt until the break.
After recess, Rainford Kalaba and Jackson Muleka seemed to cause problems but Raja’s shotstopper Anas Zniti was extremely attentive, denying them at every opportunity available.
Raja skipper Badr Banoun sealed it when he doubled the lead eleven minutes from time. With the return leg set for March 7th in Lubumbashi it remains to be seen if Joseph Ochaya’s side can turn around the deficit to make the semifinals of the CAF Champions League.
