Uganda Cranes captain and his Mamelodi Sundowns team took stern control of their CAF Champions League group C, after picking up an important victory away to USM Alger at the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida on Saturday evening.

Hlempho Kekana’s second-half strike guided Sundowns to a narrow 1-0 victory in Algeria. Which was Algiers first defeat at home in the continental competition since 2015, and just their second in 14 years.

The Masandawana now move top of their group with seven points, Wydad Casablanca comes second with five points after their 4-1 win over Petro de Atletico in Morocco.

Algiers is third on 2 points while Petro de Atletico is bottom with just a single point from three games.

Sundowns did not have it easy, as they created very little throughout the game, but impressively took the one opportunity they were given to take the lead and three points.

At the other end, Onyango who recently had to suffer the horror of an error against Golden Arrows, did superbly well, with his performance reminding us why he is considered the best goalkeeper on the continent.

Sundowns were almost made to pay in the opening minutes as Billel Benhammouda robbed possession at the edge of the box, but Onyango did well to deny him with a low save. There was another scare in the 13th minute, but again Onyango stood tall against Zakaria Benchaâ.

When Sundowns skipper Kekana put the visitors ahead in the 59th minute, tucking home after a defensive error put him through on goal, Algiers was sparked into life and probed more.

Onyango the saviour for a number of occasions. First, he denied second-half substitute Aymen Mahious from close range. He did well to deny Benhammouda initially, but he pushed the ball straight into the path of Hamza Koudri who flashed the rebound wide.

Pitso Motsimane’s men return to action at home to Algiers on January 11th, but they will have to navigate past AmaZulu and Bidvest Wits on January 4th and 7th respectively in the Absa Premiership.

Elsewhere, Joseph Ochaya sat out as TP Mazembe played to a 1-1 draw away to Primero de Agosto. Rainford Kalaba gave Mazembe the lead in the eighth minute before Paciencia Mabululo cancelled out his goal four minutes later.

Mazembe remain top of group A after Zamalek also settled for a 1-1 draw against Zambia’s ZESCO United.

In Group B, Salim Jamal’s Al Hilal secured a 1-0 victory away to Etoile du Sahel as they moved joint top with six points but stay third. Al Ahly defeated Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum to also go level with Etoile on six points.

In Group D, defending champions Esperance de Tunis retain their stronghold on the group despite a goalless draw at home to AS Vita. Meanwhile, Raja Casablanca closes the gap on the group leaders to just one point after defeating JS Kabaylie 2-0 to secure their second consecutive victory.
