Members of Moroccan side Raja Casablanca squad have been ordered to undergo a week-long quarantine period following various recent coronavirus infections within the team.
The Moroccan health ministry has directed the club to subject members of both the technical staff and the players to a seven-day quarantine and advised them to abandon the team’s trip to Egypt.
The decision leaves Raja’s encounter against Zamalek in the CAF Champions League in suspense with the team missing their scheduled flight on Tuesday.
The Moroccan side was due to be hosted by Zamalek in the return leg of the Champions League semi-final at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt on Saturday.
Zamalek leads the encounter 1-0 on aggregate after defeating Raja in the first leg on Sunday.
Up to eight members of the Raja team have tested positive for the coronavirus with six new cases confirmed by the club after the first leg. Two of those cases were for members of the coaching staff.
According to the health ministry directive, the Raja team will be subject to a fresh set of testing on Tuesday, October 27, before they can be cleared to return home or even undertake international travel.
Health officials have also written to CAF demanding that the said semi-final be postponed to a future date after the quarantine period has lapsed, with further reports indicating that CAF could be open to that possibility.
Zamalek president Mansour Mortada has showed solidarity with Raja Casablanca and added his voice on the calls to postpone the match until after the quarantine period.
CAF is yet to make a decision on the situation but a communication from the body is expected soon.
Zamalek seek for their sixth Champions League crown. Their last triumph came 18 years ago when they defeated Raja 1-0 on aggregate in the final in 2002.
Raja was recently crowned Moroccan champions in October after prevailing over rivals Wydad Casablanca in a close battle which was settled on the final day of the season.
