Zamalek and Al Ahly is perhaps the epitome of football rivalries on the African continent. The Cairo derby had its first meeting 103 years ago, and what started as a local rivalry has traversed borders since.

On Friday, November 27, another edition will be played out with the grand purpose of securing the continent’s biggest club football prize the CAF Champions League.

The two Egyptian giants will lock horns at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday, November 27, in what will be the first time two clubs from the same country meet in the Champions League final.

But the meeting will carry even more significance specifically for Zamalek who will want to win over their rivals for the first time in the competition.

Previously, Zamalek and Al Ahly have previously faced off eight times in the competition with the later winning five times and the other three ending in draws.

Their maiden meeting happened in the 2005 CAF Champions League semi-final where Al Ahly edged Zamalek 4-1 on aggregate. They won the first leg 2-1 before a 2-0 win in the return leg.

Zamalek and Al Ahly were at it again in 2008 when they were both placed in Group A. Al Ahly won 2-1 in the first leg before a two-all stalemate in the second leg, with Ahly going on to win their sixth Champions League tile defeating Cameroon’s Cotton Sport in the final.

Four years later, another momentous clash happened when Ahly and Zamalek were again pooled together in Group B. Zamalek fell short 1-0 in the first leg, but held their rivals to a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

The four points pushed Ahly to the knockout rounds, going all the way to win their seventh continental crown, defeating Tunisia’s Esperance 3-2 on aggregate.

Zamalek again failed to register a victory over Ahly in 2013 when they again faced off in Group A. Ahly made up for a 1-1 draw in the first leg by thumping Zamalek 4-2 in the second leg.

The sequence repeated itself again, Ahly going all the way to the final where they defeated South Africa’s Orlando Pirates to secure a record eighth title.

Zamalek will be baying for revenge against their sworn rivals when the two Egyptian power houses clash on Friday for their maiden Champions League triumph over Ahly and their first title in close to two decades since 2002.
