CAF President Ahmad Ahmad banned for five years

Confederation of African Football Association (CAF) president Ahmad Ahmad has been slapped with a five-year ban from Wolrd football governing body FIFA, for abuse of his office as CAF president

The FIFA Ethics Committee which has been hearing a couple of cases against Ahmad for financial misconduct and corruption found him guilty of breach of duty, loyalty and mismanagement of funds.

“Investigation into Ahmad’s conduct as CAF President from 2017 to 2019 concerned various CAF-related governance issues,” a statement from the Ethics Committee said on Monday.

“Including financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, his involvement in CAF’s dealings with the sports equipment company Tactical Steel and other activities

The statement continued: “Ahmad had breached his duty of loyalty, offered gifts and other benefits, mismanaged funds and abused his position as the CAF President.”

“Consequently, Ahmad is sanctioned with a ban from all football-related activity (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level for five years.”

Ahmad who is currently on convalescence leave from CAF after testing positive for COVID-19 recently has been made aware of the ruling which also comes with a ban of CHF 200,000 (approx. 813,890,430).

Ahmad took over CAF management from Issa Hayatou four years and ago has presided over a reign clouded with allegations of corruption, financial misconduct among other vices that have rocked the CAF headquarters in Cairo.

In 2019, Ahmad was detained and investigated by French federal officials in his hotel in France over allegations of corruption before he was later released without any charges placed against him.

Other recent issues include controversy relating to the African Champions League final and rescheduling the timing of the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals and involvement with Lagardere Sports as a broadcaster for all CAF competitions.

While FIFA also instituted a deep audit and clean-up of CAF during Ahmad’s reign with FIFA General Secretary Fatma Samoura put in temporary charge of the African football governing body for six months in 2019.

The ban puts to end the 59-year-old from Madagascar’s bid to run for re-election for a second term as the head of African soccer.

CAF vice-president Constant Omari Selemani is who is currently in charge of the association is expected to continue as the acting president until the next general election.

CAF is set to hold its general elections in March 12 in Rabat, Morocco.
