The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is hell-bent on running both the U17 and U20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments as scheduled for next year, according to strong reports from its headquarters in Egypt.

Football’s world governing body, FIFA, announced this month that the U17 and U20 World Cups will be postponed to a future date owing to the continued threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

FIFA argued that the recent surge in COVID-19 cases and a looming second wave were behind the reason as to why the two tournaments set to be played in Peru and Indonesia in 2021 were called off.

The U17 and U20 World Cup tournaments have been pushed forward to 2023 but the hosts have been maintained.

However, despite the fact that there will not be corresponding World Cup tournaments, CAF will not be altering its calendar for the two tournaments which will were also tipped to act as the continental qualifiers.

The CAF U20 AFCON will be hosted as planned in February 2021 in Mauritania and the U17 AFCON maintained for July 2021 in Morocco.

Most of the zonal qualifiers have been completed with only the North Africa zone yet to be played.

Uganda emerged winners of both the U17 and U20 zonal qualifiers and will be joined by Tanzania for both the U17 and U20 AFCON finals as representatives from the CECAFA region.
