CAF Women CL: Lady Doves seal bronze but only by a whisker

Spencer Nakacwa and Fazila Ikwaput gave the Ugandan side a lead before Asha Djafari scored the only goal for the Tanzanian side.

Ugandan side Lady Doves registered a 2-1 narrow win against Simba Queens in the classification game of the CECAFA Samia Women Cup on Thursday, September 9 at the Kasarani Stadium.

Spencer Nakacwa and Fazila Ikwaput gave the Ugandan side a lead before Asha Djafari scored the only goal for the Tanzanian side.

Nakacwa’s top-corner spectacular effort that stretched the opposition custodian, Gelwa Rugomba, who helplessly found it in the back of the net came as early as the 21st minute.

The build-up to the goal however was equally as good because Riticia Nabbosa picked possession in the middle park, passing it to an unmarked Spencer on the left flank who drove a few steps in and pulled off the scorcher.

Simba ignited a number of attacks through midfielder Joelle Bukuru onto the left flank to forward Mawette Musolo but Lady Doves’ defence stood strong.

With the return of the second half, Simba started off like a house on fire and with a high tempo, as if to suggest that they were the most hungry for not only a leveller but also a winner.

Upon realization of this, Lady Doves made the first change that saw an introduction of Norah Alupo for hardworking forward Jowelia Nagadya who looked exhausted after giving Simba defence work to do.

In the 70th, Simba nearly found a leveller through Djafari’s powerful shot, capitalising on Opa Clement’s acute pass but the Ugandan shotstopper Daisy Nakaziro pulled off a great save to maintain her side’s lead.

Hard-talking midfielder Elizabeth Nakigozi came on for goal heroine Spencer who had picked a booking and an extra warning in a space of five minutes.

Eight minutes to the end of the game, Lady Doves engineered a quality attack that was sealed by Ikwaput’s powerful shot, one that proved too strong for goalkeeper Rugomba to handle.

Six minutes later, Djafari scored a consolation goal for Simba thanks to a well constructed buildup.

The aftermath meant that Fred Musiime’s charges walked away with 10,000 USD as a token for the third placed finish at the tournament.
