Kenya’s Vihiga Queens will be playing against Ethiopia’s on-form CBE in the final game of CECAFA Samia Women Cup at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi on Thursday evening.
This will also be the second meeting between the two sides at this particular tournament having played out to a 4-2 victory in favour of CBE during their Group (B) encounter.
CBE’s goals came from their three goal heroine Medina Awol Busser before skipper Loza Genoire sealed the party with the fourth of the day.
Vihiga on the other hand had both their goals come from Maureen Achieng in a mouthwatering display never mind the fact that it wasn’t enough to shift the favour in their hands.
To reach the finals, Vihiga eliminated Simba Queens in a hard-fought 2-1 win. Achieng gave the Kenyan side the lead in the 63rd minute before Aisha Mnunka levelled matters for the Tanzanians seven minutes later.
The 18-year old pint sized forward Gentrix Shikangwa rose the highest and above Simba Queens’ defenders to regain Vihiga’s lead with only two minutes left on the clock, thereby delivering victory.
On the other hand, CBE qualified on the luck of spot kicks after a 1-1 draw in normal time and extra-time periods against Ugandan opposition, the Lady Doves.
While at the spot kicks, Loza Abera Genoire, Aregash Kalsa, Tarikwa Yakuru, Adisu Asfaw and Tadesse did their job to perfection to muster a perfect five and win the game.
They approach the much anticipated game as favourites having scored a total of 25 goals and conceded only four in four games played.
Vihiga have however managed to amass a sum of 21 goals and conceded only five in the four played while at the tournament.
The motivation here remains that the winner between the two sides will emerge as the CECAFA representative in the inaugural TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League that will be held in Egypt later this year.
