Defending Champions Azam FC made a statement when they defeated TP Mazembe 2-1 in the first quarter final of the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup to storm the semifinals.
In the tie played at the Kigali Stadium, Nyamirambo on Tuesday evening, Mazembe dominated the first quarter of the match with timely attacks but Jackson Muleka, skipper Rainford Kalaba, Zola Kiaku and Miche Mika all missed out on chances to break the deadlock.
Muleka had his goal disallowed for offside in the 20th minute but a minute later Ipamy Giovani put Mazembe into the lead with a great finish off a Mwape Tandi cross from the left.
Seven minutes later Azam FC levelled matters through Iddi Selman following a lapse in the TP Mazembe defence to ensure the first stanza ended in a tie.
At the beginning of second half, Azam returned stronger, in the 69th minute Obrey Chirwa put them in the lead with a well headed in effort off an Abdul Haji powerful cross capitalising on defender Mondeko Zatu school boy defending.
Both sides made changes in the second half with Paul Peter and Lusajo Mwaikenda coming on for Donald Ngoma and Salmin Iddi Hoza respectively.
Mazembe brought on Lizonda Glody, Tshibango Isaac and Ambokila Eliud for Ushidi WA Kubanza, Ipamy Gionavi and skipper Rainford Kalaba respectively.
Christian Kouame was booked on the side of Mazembe while Oscar Masai was also booked on the side of Azam.
The Tanzanian giants managed to hold on despite constant attacks by Mazembe to pick a memorable and sweet victory.
Azam became the first team to reach the semi finals in which they will face the winner between APR FC and AS Maniema from DRC.
