Goals from unlikely sources in Jackson Nunda and Mustafa Kizza guided KCCA FC to the semi-finals of the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup after they beat Rayon Sports 2-1 at Kigali Stadium, Nyamirambo on Tuesday, July 15th, 2019.
It was a highly anticipated encounter with both teams coming into this year’s competition as champions of their respective domestic leagues.
Towards the 20th minute mark, KCCA custodian Charles Lukwago was called into action to deny Rayon Sports’ Eric Iradukunda from scoring the opener.
Kiiza scored his first goal at the tournament after 33 minutes to give the Uganda Premier League champions a well-deserved lead into the half time break.
The temple of the game rose furthermore immediately at the restart of the second half, Allan Okello seemed to have doubled KCCA’s advantage in the 46th but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Rayon Sports’ Herve Rugwiro cancelled Kizza’s goal in the 48th minute to bring back the Rwandan giants in the game.
After his effort was ruled out for offside at the restart of the second half, Okello went close on two occasions towards the hour mark but couldn’t beat Rayon Sports custodian Kimenyi Yves.
But later in 65th, the 1978 champions got a second goal through Nunda who brilliantly headed in Muzamiru Mutyaba’s well-timed cross.
Nunda’s goal was just enough to eliminate Rayon Sports as it sent Mike Mutebi’s charges into the semi-finals.
