CECAFA 2019: McKinstry wary of ‘wounded lion’ Burundi

By Shafic Kiyaga

Uganda Cranes get their CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup campaign underway against Burundi on Saturday December 7th at the StarTimes Stadium Lugogo.

The Group A clash pits together two teams that last met in the 2020 African Nations Championships (CHAN) play-off round qualifiers.

Uganda under then caretaker boss Abdallah Mubiru, went on to wash aside Burundi 6-0 on aggregate over two legs.

At the Startimes stadium, Fahad Bayo, Vianne Ssekajugo and Allan Okello were on the score sheet for the Cranes; the trio are part of the Cranes squad that will play at the CECAFA.

Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry who was in the stands then, has sounded skeptic instead of his usual confident and valorous nature about the kind of opponent they are going to face.

“We know that Burundi are going to try and prove to be a tough opponent,” McKinstry told media ahead of the game.

“There is nothing more dangerous than a wounded lion, and Burundi will feel wounded after the CHAN performances.”

“Obviously we had successful performances both in Burundi and Kampala, but that was a different day and a different game. So tomorrow you can guarantee that they will come out to set the record straight,” he added.

McKinstry earlier revealed his 20 man squad that will carry the nation’s hopes of picking up a record 15th CECAFA triumph.

The bulk of the players in camp were part of the team that played against Burundi in the CHAN qualifiers, the Irishman has warned them against thinking that it may be more or less the same type of game.

“The players need to be more than ready for the game, because if they think that it will be a continuation of the CHAN game, then we may be in for a huge surprise,” McKinstry noted.

The Cranes were drawn in the same group with Burundi at both the 2015 and 2017 editions of the CECAFA, with the former winning 1-0 in 2015, while they played to a goalless stalemate in 2017.
