CECAFA 2019: Somalia no push overs despite defeat to Uganda

Hosts Uganda Cranes cruised to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Somalia at the StarTimes Stadium Lugogo on Monday evening to tighten their grip on Group A.

Allan Okello scored in either side of halftime to guide Uganda to consecutive victories in their two games so far at the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup.

The playmaker opened the scoring in the 28th minute, his shot taking a deflection off a Somalia defender, before beating the keeper Said Aweys Ali who initially looked to have it covered.

The forward’s trademark magic was again on show, in the 67th minute, cutting inside from the right before curling the ball into the back of the net.

“Somalia had a good game, and for a side that played a game two days ago, they really gave a good account of themselves,” Cranes’ coach Johnathan McKinstry said of Somalia’s performance in the post-match press conference.

“They pressed us really well for the opening 70 minutes of the game, they did well closing off our space. And in the final 20, they almost let off which is expected because two games in 72 hours, takes a toll on everybody.” McKinstry added.

Somalia head coach Bashir Hayford commended his players for the spirited performances, calling for more of the same in their other games as they look at making it to the semi-finals.

“We are improving, and am happy the way we played. We had to make a couple of changes to the team after the first game, but still, we had a good game. Hayford said of his team’s performance.

“We lost, but I would take the 2-0 scoreline because the last time we met with Uganda was 7-1 in the CHAN. Today we showed the fight, and hopefully, we can build on that,” the Ghanaian added.

Uganda surely should have scored even more in the game, but they were lethargic in front of goal. Okello stepped up to the fore to grab a brace.

A fixture between Uganda and Somalia would produce a statement result for the Cranes five years ago.

The last time the two sides met was during the African Nations Championships qualifiers, Uganda winning 7-1 on aggregate at Lugogo on Monday evening, Somalia gave a different account of themselves.

Uganda face Eritrea in their next game on Wednesday, December 11th, while Somalia who are fourth in Group A with a single point after their 1-1 draw with Djibouti on the opening day, return to action on Friday, December 13th against Djibouti.
