The Uganda U17 national team will be targeting nothing other than absolute victory at the 2020 CECAFA U17 Challenge Cup in Rwanda which will guarantee them an automatic place at the U17 AFCON finals.

The two sides will face off at Umuganda Stadium in Rubavu on Saturday, December 12.

According to head coach Hamzah Lutalo, the team is ready for the task after going through thorough training and preparation for the tournament for over a month.

“We have trained for a very long time and the players are physically as well as mentally ready for the battle at hand,” Lutalo said on Wednesday.

Uganda Cubs are placed in Group A alongside rivals Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

South Sudan will hold a specific challenge for the Cubs in the group. They stunned the Uganda Cranes 1-0 in the AFCON qualifiers at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, when they faced each other in the just concluded 2020 CECAFA U-20 Championship, they played to a goalless draw in group B.

It will be interesting to watch how big a challenge they present when they meet in the opening game of the tournament.

Hamza Lutalo’s boys will also have an axe to grind against arch rivals Kenya before they wrap their group stage action against Ethiopia.

Nine teams will compete in the tournament with hosts Rwanda, Djibouti and Tanzania making up group B.

The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals of the tournament which also doubles as the zonal qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations.

The two finalists will book their ticket to the continental football showcase in Morocco next year from where two teams will qualify for the U17 FIFA World Cup.
