Uganda Hippos captain Gavin Kizito Mugweri is confident that the Hippos will bring the CECAFA U20 championship trophy back to Uganda.
Kizito led the Uganda Hippos as they secured a crucial win 3-1 win over Kenya Rising Stars in tournament’s semi-finals played at the Black Rhino Sports Stadium, Karatu.
Victory for the Hippos also meant that they qualified for the AFCON U20 finals for the first time in history.
“We are going to work hard and take the trophy back to Uganda,” Kizito said after the game that saw them also seal qualification for the AFCON U20 finals that will be held in Mauritania in 2021.
“We have played the semi-finals and God has helped us to secure a win today which makes me sure that we shall win the tournament.”
“As I said before, we didn’t come here to participate in the tournament rather we are here to compete and win the tournament,” the skipper added.
The Uganda Hippos faced a challenge from Kenya’s style of play which was rather physical and direct Kenneth Ssemakula broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute of the game.
Ivan Bogere then scored two goals either side of the halftime break including one from the penalty spot to put the game to bed before Enock Wanyama pulled a goal back for Kenya with eight minutes to go.
Uganda Hippos’ defence commanded by Gavin Kizito has only conceded two goals while they have also scored nine goals in three games.
Uganda will play against the hosts, Tanzania in the CECAFA U20 final on Wednesday, December 2.
