CHAN 2020: Advantage Cranes after win over Somalia

Uganda Cranes put one leg into the next qualification round of the 2020 Total African Nations Championships qualifiers.

Through Patrick Kaddu, Mustafa Kizza and Taddeo Lwanga, the Cranes defeated Somalia 3-1 in the first leg of the preliminary round played at Al Hajji Hussein Gouled Stadium in Djibouti on Saturday evening. 

Cranes head coach Abdallah Mubiru named a strong starting XI that had eight KCCA FC players, two Vipers SC players and one Express FC player.

The Cranes however found it hard to break the deadlock early in the game. despite a number of created opportunities until.

It was in added time of the first half when Patrick Kaddu found the back of the net from 12 yards after Allan Kayiwa’s cross was handled in the area.

After recess, the Cranes made their first change in the 57th that saw Shafiq Kagimu coming on for Kayiwa. 

In the 64th minute, left back Mustafa Kizza doubled the Cranes lead from a free kick that went direct into the net. 

With seven minutes to normal time, Taddeo Lwanga made it 3-0 tapping in Kizza’s ground cross, Somalia pulled one back capitalising on a John Revita error.

The 1-3 result meant the Cranes head into the return leg scheduled for August 3rd 2019 at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo with an advantage.

The winner over two legs will face the winner between South Sudan and Burundi in the final qualification round to determine who makes it to the final CHAN tournament that will be held in Cameroon in 2020.
