Mali booked their place in the final of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) after beating Guinea 5-4 on penalties.

Both sides held a tough one at Japoma Stadium on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, playing a virgin tie after 90 minutes and extra time.

Guinea almost opened the scoring after just 50 seconds following a swift attack through Yahkoubah Barry, but Mamadou Doumbia did well to thwart him, with the defender staying down injured. He was later substituted for Barou Sanogo with injury.

Both sides continued to match each other through the first half, with Mali producing the best chance but Guinea goalkeeper Cheick Abdoul did well to keep his side in the game.

Guinea also had the ball in the back of the net in the 43rd minute, Barry beating the defensive line before finishing well, but referee Mohamoud Elbana ruled for offside as both sides went into the first half break still level.

Guinea had another sniff at goal 10 minutes into the second half through Victor K’s free kick, but the Mali goalkeeper was alert to tip it over the bar.

After 72 minutes, Mali launched a great counter attack but they were let down by poor finishing as all their forwards failed to put a touch on Moussa Kone’s cross.

Extra time produced a couple of thrilling moments, but both goalkeepers were intent on keeping their teams in the game.

Five minutes to the end of game time, Guinea had a chance to change the scoreboard to their favour but Mamadou Bangoura blasted his effort over the crossbar.

Substitute striker Mamadou Coulibaly decided the semi-final sending Guinea substitute goalkeeper Sekouba Camara the wrong way with the final kick of the match.

This was after Sylli National playmaker Morlaye Sylla fluffed his side’s final kick with Coulibaly ensuring that Mali converted all their kicks to spark a wild jubilation.
