CHAN 2022: An all-African coached quarterfinal

Into the quarterfinals of the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and all the eight teams that advanced from the group stages are coached by African coaches.

Seven of these tacticians are natives of their countries whereas only one is a foreigner.

Host Algeria, Mozambique, Niger, Ghana, Mauritania, Madagascar, Senegal, and Ivory Coast are the teams that stormed the last eight.

Algeria is coached by their former defender Madjid Bougherra who landed them the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar when they defeated Tunisia 2-0 in the final.

Senegal is under the stewardship of their ex-striker Pape Thiaw who featured at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan.

The 48-year-old Soualiho Haidara is managing his country Ivory Coast while Ghana is coached by the 62-year-old Ghanian Walker Annor.

Harouna Doula is Niger’s coach and he is a Nigerien former player. He guided Niger to their first CHAN and Africa Cup of Nations qualifications in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Mozambique is under the guidance of Chiquinho Conde who is their former player that played as a striker and represented the national team at three AFCON tournaments.

Romuald Rakotondrabe made history when he qualified his native country Madagascar to the quarterfinals during their first time participating in the competition.

Mauritania who are also into the last eight for their maiden time are coached by an African coach Amir Abdou from Comoros.
