CHAN 2023: Micho ridicules ‘accidental-win’ talk

By Allan Damba

Uganda Cranes outwitted Tanzania, beating them 3-0 on Saturday, to qualify for the finals of the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN), courtesy of a 4-0 win on aggregate.

Goals from Moses Waiswa, Richard Basangwa, and Rogers Mato at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende ensured Uganda eliminated their neighbors for a third time in the CHAN qualifiers.

The former’s head coach, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has thus mocked the lot that is yet to believe in his methods and those that call his team’s victories un-crafted.

“When we won 4-1 on aggregate against Tanzania in 2013, people said it was an accident,” the Serbian said to the media after the victory on Saturday.

“When we defeated them again 4-1 in 2015, some could call it a coincidence, but with this 4-0 (aggregate), it’s a habit.”

The tactician has been the subject of the media in the past weeks and months, with reports suggesting his bosses (FUFA) are not entirely pleased with his performances.

The Saturday result comes as a relief for the experienced 52-year-old, who has now taken Uganda to the CHAN finals on three occasions.

Micho was quick to express gratitude to his players for the spirited fight against a regional rival.

“In my entire coaching career, I’ve not enjoyed working than I am with this group of players. It’s a pleasure working with them.”

“I believe we have shown an enormous amount of mental strength, and fitness while technically, we have been effective,” he added.

Uganda is now guaranteed a spot at the finals slated for January 2023 in Algeria, where they will hope to make it out of the group stages for the first time in history.
