Chelsea have won the Champions League once before, famously defeating Bayern Munich on penalties in the German club’s own stadium in the 2011-12 final.

A match in which African football legend Didier Drogba wrote his name into history – while City are appearing in their first final.

“We fought together and we’re in the final of the UEFA Champions League and those are nice words,” said City manager Pep Guardiola.

“People believe it’s easy to get to the final of the Champions League. Getting to the final now makes sense of what we have done in the past four or five years. Every day these guys have been consistent and this is remarkable.”

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel said, “I’m very, very happy that we’ve achieved this [reaching the final]. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to live my life in football.”

“To have this passion as a profession, I’m more than grateful – and to do it on this level, to coach a team like this and to reach the final for a second time, I’m very thankful.”

Key players

Riyad Mahrez City’s North African superstar was the key man in their semifinal triumph over Paris Saint-Germain and he will look to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Rabah Madjer. Madjer became the first Algerian to win the Champions League when he triumphed with Porto in 1987.

Timo WernerThe German has had a tough time adapting to life in the blue of Chelsea, but he continues to work hard and provide high energy in terms of his running off the ball and pressing when out of possession. This match may be just the game for him to be richly rewarded for his determination.

Head-to-head stats

City and Chelsea have met in 168 matches across all competitions since their first clash back in 1907, the Blues have claimed 70 wins compared to 59 for the Citizens, while 39 games have been drawn.

The teams met in a Premier League clash earlier this month, with Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on May 8 thanks to goals from Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso.

It was a second straight win for the Blues over the Citizens, having also put them out of the FA Cup in April.

Battles to watch

Pep Guardiola v Thomas Tuchel – Chelsea’s German manager has gotten the better of Guardiola on two successive occasions in recent weeks, though that was not against City’s best XI. Expect a tactical chess game between these two masterminds of the ‘beautiful game’.

Oleksandr Zinchenko v Hakim Ziyech Chelsea’s Moroccan winger has scored in his last two games against City, but he’ll need to be at his best to overwhelm makeshift left-back Zinchenko, who has done a brilliant job in providing defensive ballast and linking with his midfield.

Kevin De Bruyne v Mason Mount These two midfield maestros will look to dictate terms in the middle of the park. De Bruyne holds the edge in terms of experience and outright ability, but Mount is a hungry young player eager to prove himself worthy of the lavish praise he has received this season.
