COSAFA 2019: Uganda Cranes bows out on penalties

By Brian Aheebwa

Not so often a team will go for a championship, play just one game and they are on the next plane back home.

Well at least it won’t be the case for the Cranes at the on going COSAFA Championship in Durban South Africa.

Uganda were appearing as a guest nation and because of their impressive ranking, they were seeded and competition started at the quarterfinal stage.

That fixture was against another seeded team Lesotho who defeated Uganda 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in normal time.

But it was a game of chances and largely dominated by Uganda especially in the second half.

But the game’s best first half chance fell to Lesotho’s Synous Khutlang whose tricky short from distance was reflexed wide by Uganda cranes custodian Charles Lukwago.

Express FC’s Michael Birungi had Uganda Cranes’ best chance at half time but his left foot shot couldn’t hit the target though Lesotho’s custodian Samuel Khetsekile was already beaten.

Following a lacklustre first half, there was plenty of action in the second half as both teams enjoyed a 50-50 possession of the ball in search for the opener.

Inside the last 30minutes, the game was seemingly opening up clearly for both sides when Lesotho’s Kopano Neris Tseka’s long range shot was forced back into play by the flame.

In just a blink of an eye, Uganda premier league top scorer Juma Balinya had a clear opportunity to usher the Cranes into the lead but was denied by the Lesotho’s Khetsekile.

The introduction of striker Daniel Sserukuma who came on to replace Daniel Isiagi Opolot in the 68minute saw the Cranes push more for goals.

His stunning effort was reflexed off the woodwork by Khetsekile just after he had denied him scoring from short range, Juma also had a one on one with the 38 year old but he couldn’t convert.

Tsoanelo Koetle, Hlompho Kalake and Motebang Sera converted their penalties for Lesotho before Kopano Neris Tseka missed a paneka.

Uganda and KCCA FC  leftback Mustafa Kiiza blew his penalty wide whereas John Revita and Paul Mucureezi had theirs saved by Khetsekile who went away with the man of the match award.

Muzamiru Mutyaba and Juma Balinya converted their spot but  the cranes couldn’t reach the semi finals of the COSAFA tournament.

Lesotho advance as the will now contest for the Plate against other losing quarterfinalists.
