The Uganda Senior Women National Team (The Crested Cranes) are set to negotiate against Zambia in their last Group C game of the COSAFA Women Cup in a bid to claim an automatic semifinals spot.
George William Lutalo’s side does approach this much anticipated encounter with a mindset geared at searching for a win in order to realize the dream of topping the group.
Zimbabwe’s 3-0 win over Botswana takes them to six points in Group C and top of the best 2nd-placed teams table in the Cosafa Women Championships.
According to Daily Monitor, this also means that Uganda can no longer qualify as second best team and must beat Zambia on Tuesday to make it to the semis
Meanwhile, the Crested Cranes kicked off their campaign in this prestigious tournament against Namibia on September 30, 2021and played out a barren stalemate.
In the second game, team Uganda comfortably dispatched Eswatini to register a 5-1 superb victory, a result that reignited their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stage.
While on the other hand, Zambia kicked off the tournament with an uncontested 5-0 victory over Eswatini and ascended to the top of Group C in convincing fashion.
In the second game, Zambia played against Namibia and sealed a second successive victory, putting three past the Southern African country to stretch their already massive goal difference to eight.
That said, Uganda will rely on the sharpness and agility of forward Hasifa Nassuna who scored a second half brace against Eswatini despite having come off the bench.
Zambia on the other hand will continue to rely on forwards; Margaret Belemu and 19-year-old Lubandji Ochumba who have been impressive for them and will look to ask Uganda’s defence a number of questions.
Only the teams that finish top of their respective groups get the opportunity to automatically qualify for the semifinals of the tournament.
The fourth spot will be taken up by the best second-placed team who will have to play a playoff in the event that there is a tie. Four teams will complete the quadruple required at the semifinals stage of the tournament.
