Cranes: FUFA confirm McKinstry’s backroom staff

By Shafic Kiyaga

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has maintained Abdallah Mubiru and Charles Livingstone Mbabazi on the Cranes technical team but on an interim basis.

Mubiru and Mbabazi have handled the Cranes CHAN team on interim prior to the confirmation of Jonathan McKinstry as the Cranes permanent head coach.

The duo will work with McKinstry on a probation period of six months, from which FUFA will come out with their choice on who will back McKinstry on a permanent basis.

“According to the time frame and the activities, we have decided to come up with the options for the Cranes backroom staff but they will be working on an interim basis for now,” acting FUFA President Justus Mugisha said during the press conference at FUFA house in Mengo.

“We have confirmed Mr Abdallah Mubiru and Charles Livingstone Mbabazi as the first and second assistants to McKinstry but on an interim basis.”

“The essence behind the appointment of the duo on the interim is to make sure the coach can evaluate them and before we make the final choice,” he added.

Fred Kajoba has also been reinstated as the goalkeeping coach. Kajoba was the goalkeepers’ coach under former coaches, Bobby Williamson, Micho Sredejovic and Sebastien Desabre but was sacked when FUFA disbanded the entire coaching staff after the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Geoffrey Massa also stays on as the team co-coordinator, while FUFA confirmed that they are still verifying the documents for the physiotherapists before they can name the new team doctor for the team.

At the same presser, McKinstry confirmed a 25 man squad that will play against Burkina Faso and Malawi as the Cranes get their 2021 AFCON qualifying campaign underway.
