The long waited 2019 Total AFCON groups draws of the 2019 edition were done on Friday night and Uganda was drawn against hosts Egypt, DR Congo and Zimbabwe in group A as they pursue to perform better this time around.
In the previous edition in Gabon, Uganda Cranes failed to make out of group D, they lost 1-0 to Ghana and Egypt before drawing 1-1 with Mali in the last group game. Uganda finished the last in the group with only one point and one goal.
But since it had taken 39 years for Uganda to qualify for the finals, to many, qualification was good enough but this time around advancing to the knockout stage is Uganda’s first priority.
“We now know all the teams in our group. We are going to play two strong teams in DR Congo and Egypt,” Uganda Cranes head coach Sebastien Desabre told www.fufa.co.ug after the draws.
“I think it’s a good opportunity for us to participate with good teams and we shall give it all for good results,” the Frenchman added.
That means that all Cranes players should be at their best form if Uganda is to make it to the knockout stage, all departments have to be balanced from the goal up to the striking line.
To make it possible, Cranes need to at least win their first two games against DR Congo and Zimbabwe in order to play the hosts in their last game in the group when qualification is already secured.
The last time Uganda proceeded to the knockout stage was in 1978 tournament, they won twice against Congo and Morocco and lost once against Tunisia, before going all the way to the final but lost 2-0 to eventual champions Ghana.
