Crested Cranes U-17 pick up first leg advantage with victory over Ethiopia

Uganda U-17 Women National team picked up a deserved 2-0 victory over Ethiopia U-17,in the first leg of their U-17 Women World Cup preliminary round qualifier at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo Kampala.

The U-17 side took an early lead through FUFA Female Player of the Year and Captain Juliet Nalukenge, who arrived at the far post to head home Fauzia Najjemba’s glancing header at the near post.

Uganda came close to doubling their lead moments later, but Najjemba failed to find the target from close range. Nalukenge also saw her header from close range miss the target by inches.

Ethiopia then had a chance to draw level, but they were left to rue their luck as they were denied by the crossbar following a free kick from outside the area.

Ayub Khalifah’s charges had the fair share of possesion, but headed into halftime with just a one goal lead.

Uganda continued to dominate proceedings in the second half, but still failed to create clear cut chances as they were blunt in the final third.

In the 86th minute, Catherine Nagadya who earlier replaced Nandago Hadijjah surely put the goal beyond Ethiopia, as she also headed home Najjemba’s cross at the far post.

Uganda will look at sealing progress to the next round when they travel to Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa for the second round scheduled for January 26th.

The winner on aggregate after the second leg will progress to the next round where they will face the winner between Tanzania or Burundi.
