Debutant Kipson Atuheire’s goal helped guide Wakiso Giants to their first win of the season and the first under head coach Douglas Bamweyana.
The Purple Sharks had drawn each of their opening five games of the season finally got off the mark with a 1-0 victory over Mbarara City at the Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara.
Mbarara City edged their visitors in terms of possession early on, but both sides laboured to find the creative spark which was perhaps down to the stop-start tempo as the game was infested with niggly tackles.
The first real opportunity of the game came after the half-hour mark, Bashir Mutanda shooting over the bar from an angle after doing well to beat Edward Satulo.
Wakiso’s better opportunities were reduced to free kicks from the edge of the box. Vianney Ssekajugo had his effort well saved while Joshua Lubwama was inches close.
The second half started with a bit of spark and it is the Ankole Lions who nearly benefitted from Solomon Okwalinga’s solo drive, but the forward’s shot from the left sailed beyond the upright.
Wakiso thought that they had taken the lead 10 minutes into the second half but Vianney Ssekajugo’s goal was ruled out for offside.
The Purple Sharks didn’t have to wait long for their first goal of the game, Atuheire lobbying over goalkeeper Muhammad Ssekeba from Owen Kasule’s clever through ball.
With five minutes to go, Mbarara was awarded a penalty, but Jude Ssemugabi placed his effort against the crossbar to deny his side a way back into the game.
The win lifts Wakiso Giants into ninth position with eight points from their first six games. Mbarara City meanwhile remains winless six games into the season as they drop to 13th on the log, a point above the relegation zone.
