Former Egypt international forward Muhamad Nagy ‘Gedo’ announced his retirement from football on Monday, saying it is the ‘appropriate time for a new trip in life’.

Gedo enjoyed a brilliant career, but his five goals in six games as Egypt won a third consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Angola perhaps stands out as the highlight of his 18-year career.

Gedo handed the ‘Super Sub’ tag after scoring all five of his goals in the 2010 AFCON coming off the bench and not playing more than 30 minutes in any of those games.

He scored the winner in the final against Ghana in the 85th minute. He had only been introduced in the game in the 70th minute for Emad Moteab.

Gedo eventually emerged as the AFCON top scorer, where he was also named the player of the tournament for the 2010 AFCON, and was included on the 2010 AFCON dream team.

“I feel it’s the appropriate time to retire, I spent a brilliant time in the field. It was more than I expected,” Gedo tweeted.

“I am lucky to have achieved all my dreams which wouldn’t have come true without your (fans) support. I am now ready for a new trip in my life, thank you all,” the tweet added.

The 36-year-old striker started his career at Egyptian second division club Damanhour FC before joining Ittihad FC in the 2005 season.

Gedo inspired the Alexandria based side to an Egyptian Cup final in his five years at the club. In 2010, he departed Ittihad for Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

He spent five seasons at Ahly, winning two league titles, two Egyptian Cups, two CAF Champions League crowns, the 2014 CAF Confederations Cup and the CAF Super Cup.

Gedo’s time at Ahly was also highlighted by stints at English club Hull City, playing 14 times and scoring two goals over two loan spells.

He was capped 36 times for Egypt and was part of the Egyptian squad that defeated Uganda in the 2011 Nile Basin Cup, scoring the third goal in a 3-1 victory in the tournament’s final.
