The last time Express and Police met in the 2018/2019 StarTimes Uganda Premier League at Lugogo, the former won the tie 3-1.
When the two teams met again at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku, Police left with the last laugh after their 2-0 victory.
Midfielder Frank ‘Zaga’ Tumwesigye was handed his Express debut while striker Brian Umony also had his first start.
At the half hour mark, Pius Kaggwa took matters in his own hands, he dismissed Arthur Kiggundu in emphatic style.
His ground cross beat the entire Express backline before finding Juma Balinya who made no mistake from close range.
It was Balinya’s 10th of the season, taking him joint top on the scorers’ chart with SC Villa’s Bashir Mutanda.
Express almost drew level when Police goalie Davies Mutebi failed to tame Lawrence Kigonya’s effort, the former parried it at the woodwork before recovering to eventually get a grip of it.
Two minutes to break, Johnson Odong almost doubled Police’s lead but his half volleyball off Paul Willa’s head went wide.
In the second stanza, Police kept on searching for a second just as Express pushed for an equaliser but the unplayable Wankulukuku surface denied both teams.
It wasn’t until added time that Police launched a counterattack, Safi Basani Balinya found Odongo who slotted home in an empty net to double Express’ lead.
The win had Police improve the position on the sixteen team log to seventh on 24 points while Express dropped to 10th.
It was Express’ sixth loss of the season and a second in succession after their 1-0 loss to Tooro United in Buhinga.
