Souleymane Bamba’s goal with a little over 10 minutes cancelled out Godfrey Lwesibawa’s strike as Mbarara City held Express FC 1-1 at the Kakyeka Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Express coming off the back of a narrow victory over Bright Stars were looking at registering their first away victory of the season.

Mbarara meanwhile were hopeful of picking up their first win of the season after losing both their last two games and drawing against URA on the opening weekend.

Both sides deployed a more direct approach as they looked to exploit the aerial prowess of their strikers as they sought to pick them out through long balls.

Express had a slight advantage in the opening 20 minutes over their hosts, using the pace of Godfrey Lwesibawa and trickery of Eric Kambale to create in roads.

Lwesibawa had the first opportunity of the game, Frank Kalanda brushing the ball into his path but the former put his effort beyond the upright.

Lwesibawa broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, his free-kick through the wall beating Muhamad Ssekebba who should have done better to keep out the shot at his near post.

Lwesibawa who was a handful for the Ankole Lions backline through the opening 40 minutes failed to double Express’ lead after he was played through on goal by Kalanda, but his audacious chip failed to find the target.

Mbarara who were pedestrian for spells in the first half, looked to have engaged a different gear for the start of the second half, stepping up their chase for an equaliser.

Bashir Mutanda had his side’s biggest opportunity, with Ivan Eyam setting up the striker but Mutanda failed to find the target.

Mbarara’s period of dominance paid off in the 77th minute, defender Souleymane Bamba heading Jasper Aheebwa’s corner past a stranded Mathias Muwanga.

The Ankole Lions stayed on the front but failed to find a winning goal, settling for a single point and their second draw in four games so far.

Mbarara remains 13th on the log with two points while Express slip to seventh on the log on five points.

Express now turn their focus to the Kampala derby against arch-rivals SC Villa at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium on Saturday.

Mbarara on the other hand will make the long trip to Tororo to visit MYDA FC at the King George IV Stadium on Saturday before the league takes a two-month break to allow Uganda Cranes prepare for the 2021 CHAN tournament.
