Wakiso Giants confirmed their status in Uganda’s top flight football next season with a 2-1 win against minnows Entebbe FC with a game in hand at Kyabazinga Stadium Bugembe on Thursday.
Norman Ojik and Ivan Kiweewa scored for the Ibrahim Kirya coached side who entered the game looking for three points in order to seal a StarTimes Uganda Premier League slot next season.
Though Wakiso Giants started the game on a low pace, they later picked momentum and started to show their hunger for goal on the highly anticipated game.
Wakiso Giants’ fans came in large numbers as witnesses as their team was making it to the to the top, they supported Wakiso from the word go till the end.
Wakiso Giants’ first chance came in the 25th minute of the game when Abdul Karim Kasule headed wide Ayub Kisaliita’s lofty cross before Feni Ali missed another when he fired wide one minute later.
However, in the 31st minute of the game, the Purple Sharks finally broke the deadlock with Norman Ojik’s tap in from Kiweewa’s through ball.
Three minutes later, Feni almost doubled Wakiso’s lead but his header from Kasule’s cross was saved by Entebbe’s custodian.
Two minutes to half time Entebbe FC equalised from a corner kick, Wesley Kisakye rose high and nodded the ball home after Mansoor Mutumba’s complacency in between the posts.
Six minutes into second half, substitute Deo Ssenkumba almost doubled Wakiso’s lead but his right heavy shot went wide begging before Ojik’s second goal was cancelled out for off side.
On hour mark, Kiweewa restored Wakiso’s lead with a rebounder from a loose ball as Entebbe’s defence failed to clear the ball saved by their goalkeeper.
Wakiso gained automatic promotion after winning the Elgon Group with 40 points, although they can stretch them to 43 if they happen to win their last game.
Second placed Kyetume can only make it to the playoffs, they can only collect a maximum of 38 points if they win their two remaining games.
Elsewhere, Proline will have to wait until the last game to confirm if can acquire automatic promotion to the league, they played to a one-all stalemate with Kansai Plascon at StarTimes Stadium Lugogo.
Proline moved to 39 points Rwenzori Group while Kansai Plascon are on 38 points now with one game to go.
