Express FC assistant coach James Odoch praised his side’s resilience as the club secured their first league win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Soltilo Bright Stars on Saturday.

Express who were held by Onduparaka 11-1 on their opening day of theseason in Arua went into their game at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium with their sight on making amends for the disappointing start.

Frank Kalanda put Express ahead inside three minutes with striking partner Eric Kambale latching onto Charles Musiige’s cross to double their lead in the seventh minute.

“It was a very important to get our first win at home,” Odoch said after the game.

“We didn’t have a good game at Onduparaka in our previous game, so today’s win was very important for us.”

“When you are playing at home, you have that confidence but our opponents (Bright Stars) challenged us physically and made it hard for us,” he added.

The Red Eagles looked to cruise to an easy victory after their brilliant start, but Augustine Kacancu halved their lead in the 18th minute which changed the script of the game.

Express created the better opportunities with Bright Stars goalkeeper Benson Wagima denying Kambale, while defender Allan Katwe’s block kept out George Ssenkaaba’s goal bound effort.

But even with their edge in the game, Odoch says it was important for the players to keep their heads calm and stick to their approach and deny their opponents space in behind.

“We had to stay calm and stay in the game, we had a couple of knocks in the opening minutes, so we had to stay focussed, have numbers behind the ball and make it tough for them,” Odoch said.

Express now look forward to a demanding week which includes a tricky away trip to Mbarara City at Kakyeka before they host rivals SC Villa in the derby at the Betway Muteesa II Stadium.

“We need to build from this in our next game. We have a couple of mistakes to correct from today because Mbarara is another hard fixture especially away, but we want to continue winning,” Odoch continued.

Express FC climbed to sixth on the log with four points with a game in hand.
