Young Africans SC midfielder and Uganda Cranes deputy skipper Khalid Aucho has been voted the 2022 Footballer of the Year, beating Mamelodi Sundowns’ goalkeeper Dennis Masinde Onyango and Vipers SC forward Yunus Sentamu.
It is a vote decided exclusively by the readers of Football256, Aucho collected 3,646,064 (79.40%) votes, Sentamu was second after collecting 52,3876 (11.41%) while Onyango came third with 42,2278 (9.20% 3).
Much as voters from different parts of the world had a say in the decision, 90% of Aucho’s votes came from Tanzania where he plies his trade.
Aucho is the fourth winner of the award, taking over from Taddeo Lwanga, Nicholas Wadada and Allan Okello who won it in 2021, 2020 and 2019 respectively.
The colossus midfielder has had arguably his most potent year as he was a key pillar for Yanga on their journey to a domestic treble in the 2021/22 season.
Aucho guided Yanga to their 28th Tanzania Premier League title, albeit, as ‘invincibles’ after they went the entire season unbeaten.
They accumulated 74 points, 13 ahead of second placed Simba SC (61), who are also their most bitter rivals.
Aucho also guided Yanga to the 2021/22 Tanzania FA Cup, where they beat Coastal Union 4-1 in penalties in the final, following a 3-3 draw after extra-time.
In an excellent year, the left-footer helped his team to a 1-0 victory over Simba in the 2022 Community Shield, to round off a hat-trick of glory.
To sum up his over 12-month success, Aucho was a strong figure as Yanga made it to the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, past giants Club Africaine of Tunisia.
Yanga currently occupies second on the Tanzanian League table with 23 points, three adrift of leaders Azam FC. The former have however played three games less.
