Johnathan McKinstry has parted ways with FUFA as the head coach of the Uganda Cranes, Football256 can confirm.

McKinstry was suspended from his role as Cranes coach in early March ahead of the final Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Malawi.

The Cranes drew with Burkina Faso at Kitende and lost 1-0 to Malawi as they missed out on the 2021 AFCON ticket under the stewardship of McKinstry deputy Abdallah Mubiru.

McKinstry was hired on a three-year deal in September 2019 and later that year guided the Cranes to a 14th CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup in Kampala.

The Irishman started the 2021 Africa Cu of Nations qualifiers on the right football with a barren draw to Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou.

He followed that up with a 2-0 win to Malawi at home and later struggled to win 1-0 against South Sudan in Kitende.

Before mismanaging the return leg in Nairobi Kenya as they lost the game 1-0.

The South Sudan loss didn’t help the matter, especially since it was followed by a shambolic display at the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon.

Cranes picked just one point off Rwanda before losing 2-1 and 5-2 against Togo and Morocco respectively.

That was Cranes’ worst performance at CHAN in all their five appearances, and it was after that that FUFA asked McKinstry to step aside for a month.

His suspension ended t the end of March and he had resumed his usual duties of watching Uganda Premier Leagues and following the foreign-based players.
