FUFA targeting U13s to build strong national teams

By Brian Aheebwa

Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) have a vision: ‘To be the number football nation in Africa on and off the field.’

Well, to achieve that, certain things have to be in place, one of those are structures especially in the technical section.

Footballers must be spotted and nurtured early enough for them to scale to the heights many believe they should be but to also have strong national teams.

FUFA wants to take that route after they launched the FUFA Primary Schools Championship together with the Ministry of Education and Sports.

‘We can only achieve our vision by following procedures laid down for developing grassroots football,” FUFA president Moses Magogo said in a press conference on Wednesday in Mengo.

“There is no shortcut to football development. We take responsibility to create the category of U15 so that we can track these players.”

“The top clubs in Europe can only recruit players at the age of seventeen to take them to the academies and prepare them for the bigger stage,’ Magogo added.

Magogo revealed that the competition is for primary school pupils under the age of 13, something that is meant to revive the development of youth football in the country.

Over 400 schools from 75 districts and the eight FUFA regions have so far registered for the first edition of the competitions which is scheduled to kick off on June 5th, 2019

The competition is strictly about talent identification for other FUFA competitions like the FUFA Juniors League is that national U17 competition. The products of that league then feature for the national U17 side at continental level.

The competition will be played at district level where the winner will be declared as the FUFA district primary schools champion.

A regional competition will then follow with the eight winners from each region qualifying for the National competition at the Njeru Technical Centre.
