Throughout ages many sports legends have inspired the young generation who adore the stories and careers of these outstanding individuals.
It is in this spirit that the rising stars gain passion and love for excellence.
Gomba Lions’ defender Gift Fred “Giggy” sings special praise for Ibrahim Sekagya noting that Uganda Cranes legend now coach at New York Red Bull inspired him to fall in love with soccer more-so taking on the defending role.
“I can recall that it’s Sekagya that pulled my strings towards soccer and since then I have always wanted to do things on the field of play like him.” The excited defender told Football256 in an exclusive interview.
“He made soccer look a very simple and an enjoyable thing to do. I loved his confidence and the roaring command that he laid at the back while organising the defence in the proper and required way possible.”
Defending is a quite an integral part in football and the role has been advanced in the modern game with defenders playing not only the crucial role of keeping it tight at the back, but also igniting the team’s attacks.
However Gift has mastered and crafted the required art of a modern defender. He is a great game reader, solid in one on one situations but also good at commanding and winning aerial balls
His best match thus far was during the 2019 University games when his side, Bugema University came from two goals down to tie the game to 3-3, going on to emerge victors on penalties and finish third in the tournament.
His worst game though was when he missed the penalty for Booma Football Club during the Regional League playoffs and his side failed to sail to the FUFA Big League.
“It was my worst experience in my football journey. It was hard to believe but it happened and I let down my team to gain promotion to the Big League but it was a lesson taken and it is on that made me stronger.”
Giggy’s recent excellent display with Gomba Lions during the ongoing Masaza Cup tournament at the Fufa Technical Center, Njeru has earned him relevant plaudits.
Gift aspires to trace the footsteps of his role-model Ibrahim Sekagya as he strives to earn a move to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
Ibrahim Sekagya was born and bred in the suburbs of Kawempe in the capital of Uganda, Kampala. He started his playing career at KCCA FC in 1997 to 2001.
He later played at Atlétićo dé Rafaela (2001-2002), Ferro Carril Oeste (2002-2005), Arsenal de Sarandi (2005-2007), Red Bull Salzburg (2007-2013) and later went to New York Red Bull where he retired in 2014.
He is currently the assistant head coach at New York Red Bulls’ reserve team.
