Greenlight to make or break Vipers’ title chances

By Clive Kyazze

Many argue that the Greenlight Stadium in Arua remains the fiercest ground to visit in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, especially if your ambitions are beyond just being part of the competition.

Vipers Sports Club will make the trip to West Nile with nothing but victory on their mind if they are to keep their title chances for the 2018/2019 season alive.

If their eyes will be glued to what will be happening on the pitch in Onduparaka, their ears will be back in Kampala following events at the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo where table leaders KCCA FC will host URA.

Vipers have grown in stature and looks like Michael Nam Ouma and Edward Golola have been able to find candidates in areas that were affecting the team.

Aziz Kayongo has been a revelation at left back since the deep in form of Yayo Lutimba, so as Ibrahim Tembo in midfield, filling the void left by the injured Geoffrey Wasswa.

But Vipers have been short of creativity since Moses Waisswa’s form also went AWOL, Tom Masiko came off with two assists when they defeated Bright Stars 3-0 at Kitende on Friday in arguably his best game since he joined the club last season.

There still be question marks on Karim Nizigiyimana’s fitness and acclimatization to the Ugandan league, he seems not to be the coaches’ favorites when playing away from home because of the nature of the pitches, Greenlight is one that will not favour his style.

Tito Okello and Denis Mukwala started against Bright Stars, they both got onto the score sheet, it’s not yet clear whether the duo will continue or Daniel Muzeyi Sserunkuma will make a return to the team.

Ten League games the Caterpillars have played this season at home, they won five, drawn four and lost once, the 2-0 against KCCA FC

But they are yet to pick a win in their last three at home, actually games against URA, Kirinya Jinja SS and Mbarara City have all ended in barren draws. Before that, they had enjoyed a winning streak against Police (2-1), Paidha Black Angels (2-1) and Ndejje Lions (3-0).

Vipers’ have traveled nine times this season, their way form has also produced mixed results, they have only picked four wins and five draws, their last away win coming against Nyamityobora (1-0), they remain the only unbeaten side in the league though

A win in Arua will keep the Venoms in touching distance with KCCA FC but also narrow the gap with the Lugogo side provided they don’t pick maximum points against URA.
