How Uganda Voted at the 2020 Best FIFA Awards

With the coronavirus pandemic interrupting sports the world over, some football awards of the year 2020 were abandoned which included; the Balon d’Or and the African Player of the Year Awards.

However, on Thursday, December 17, the 2020 Best FIFA Football Awards were handed out to the most prominent individuals in the world of football this year in a virtual ceremony held in Switzerland.

Robert Lewandowski and Lucy Bronze were the big winners of the day, taking home the Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year Awards, respectively.

Lewandowski had an impressive year scoring 51 goals in all competitions, won the champions league, the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal with his club Bayern Munich.

He also finished as the Champions League with 15 goals and the Bundesliga top scorer on 34 goals respectively.

The Poland forward beat usual suspects Cristiano Ronald and Lionel Messi to the accolade.

 It’s always only the national team coaches, captains and selected media personnel from the associations under FIFA with the honour to vote.

We therefore take a look at how Uganda’s representatives casted their votes.

Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry voted for Sadio Mané, Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah in that order.

Dennis Onyango; Cranes captain voted for Mohamed Salah Sadio, Mané and Robert Lewandowski respectively.

Stephen Mayamba the selected media personnel went for Robert Lewandowski, Sadio Mané and Lionel Messi.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp beat his compatriot Hans-Dieter Flick and Marcelo Bielsa to the Male Coach of the Year Award.

And in this category, McKinstry voted for Bayern’s Hans-Dieter Flick, Klopp and Bielsa in that order, while Onyango voted for Flick and Klopp in first and second but voted for Real Madrid’s Zinedine Zidane instead of Bielsa.

Mayamba voted the same way as McKinstry went it came to the coach of the year, he was in for Flick, Klopp and Bielsa in that order.

Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was voted the best goalkeeper of the year but surprisingly missed out on the best eleven team.

McKinstry and Mayamba had the same names in order once again choosing Neuer, Alisson Becker and Jan Oblak in that order, while Onyango voted for Neuer, Kaylor Navas and Thibaut Courtois.

Uganda Female National team coach Faridah Bulega, captain Ruth Aturo and The Observer’s Mark Namanya voted on behalf of Uganda in the Female Awards. And below is how they voted.
