A late Joseph Janjali equalizer extended Police’s winless run to seven games as they played to a 1-1 draw against Bright Stars on a Tuesday evening at the MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
The draw means the Cops are without a win in seven consecutive encounters having suffered defeat four times and amassed three draws in the process.
Veteran midfielder Tonny Mawejje broke the deadlock after just 10 minutes having latched on a loose ball in the box. It came after Duncan Sseninde’s freekick was spilt by goalkeeper Simon Tamale to grant Mawejje an easy finish.
Despite both sides enjoying an almost equal share of the possession, it’s the home team that had had the majority of chances to stretch their lead.
At 26 minutes, defender Hassan Muhamood let fly from over 40 yards with a thunderous drive that only missed the target by a few inches.
Bright Stars’ Joseph Janjali could have equalized in the 32nd minute but a fine save from goalkeeper Derrick Ochan denied him from long-range.
Twice, Sseninde failed to find the back of the net after meeting decent crosses from Denis Rukundo.
Five minutes after the break, Brian Muruuli could have doubled the home lead but he watched on as his superb header hit the woodwork.
Later on, Muruuli turned provider to substitute Derrick Kakooza but the youngster produced a poor header straight at the goalkeeper from five yards.
As head coach Abdallah Mubiru’s outfit looked all but certain of the win, Janjali turned up with a good freekick that beat Ochan to the back of the net with just a minute to play.
A visit to West Nile against Onduparaka FC awaits Police on Tuesday 22nd 2021 whereas Bright Stars will host survival fighters Kyetume FC on Wednesday next week.
