Leaving Busoga United to join record Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa was ‘an easy decision’ for new signing Isma Mugulusi.
After passing a medical earlier in the week, the Jogoo showed off their latest marquee signing on Sunday, who expressed interest in signing for the club, despite interest both locally and abroad.
“Joining SC Villa is one of the easiest decisions of my career, Mugulusi said in his first interview with the club, adding; “To the Villa fans, I am here to win.”
The Uganda U20 Hippos midfielder signed a two-year contract, joining on a free transfer expressed his desire to walk in the footprints of great Villa legends who hail from the Eastern part of Uganda.
Specifically sounding out Jogoo legend Hakim Magumba’s time at the club as a big influence on his decision, Mugulusi promised Villa fans success.
A bit like Mugulusi, Magumba proved his potential while at Iganga FC between 1995 – 1997, before joining Villa’s first team and helping them to seven league titles, three Uganda Cups and two CECAFA Club titles between 1998 and 2005.
“Reflecting on how other players have crossed the Nile to join Villa, like Hakim Magumba, I knew it was the right path,” he mentioned.
“I thank my parents and the club for swiftly helping put my interests on the fore front of all this. I cannot wait to meet my teammates,” Mugulusi continued.
Unfortunately, Villa has not won a league title since 2004. The onus will now lie on Mugulusi and Co. to try and win the club their first league crown in 17 years, and first piece of silverware since 2015.
The 17-year-old spent two years at Busoga United after being promoted from their junior team at the start of the 2019/20 season.
While he played a meagre role for Busoga United in his maiden season, Mugulusi became an integral part of the team in is final season, playing 13 games and scoring four goals as the team strived to beat relegation.
He was part of the Uganda U20 side that reached the final of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Mauritania early this year.
Mugulusi becomes the second official signing by Villa in this transfer window following the acquisition of Mugulusi’s former teammate Kenneth Ssemakula from BUL Bidco.
