Brian Kalumba has paid tribute to the spirit of brotherhood and unique determination shared by the players at UPDF FC, as they continue to enjoy a strong first season back to the top flight.

UPDF has flourished since gaining promotion back to the top flight following their relegation in 2018.

The Army side lies eighth on the table, on 32 points, three points off fourth position in a season where they even sat top of the division after five games of the season.

Kalumba’s seven league goals have provided the spark for the Army side as they continue to surpass expectation in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

“We are proud of what we have managed to achieve as a group so far this season,” Kalumba told Football256, before adding “It has not been as easy as you might expect, but the team as stuck together.”

“Our determination has been key because it has helped us ride the challenges we have faced in between. The spirit and togetherness within the group has really helped push us to where we are.”

A 5-1 humbling by Wakiso Giants in their recent league game was the latest set back in UPDF’s season, but according to Kalumba, it is not a result that should curtail their season.

UPDF hosts league strugglers MYDA FC at the Military Barracks Grounds in Bombo on Tuesday. Kalumba says that a result over MYDA, who are second from bottom provides an opportunity to return to winning ways.

“We were disappointed with the result against Wakiso last week,” he said.

“Honestly, they won quite easily but we ought to have done more and give them a tougher challenge in the game.”

“But that is now in the past because we have to refocus our energy on MYDA who visit us next. We want three points from that game and personally I hope I can return among the gaols,” Kalumba stated.

“The golden boot race is still as open because many lads want to win it and am not shying away from that. It is an objective I set from the beginning of the season.”

“Only five goals separate me from the top scorer and that is not far with eight games until the end of the season. If I can find some consistency starting with MYDA, then that will help mu cause,” he explained.

Kefa Kisala’s men have been formidable at home, collecting 22 points from their total tally at home. But two wins from their previous five games does not make easy reading for the Army side.

Their visitors meanwhile have won only two games this season and suffered a second league high 16 defeats from 22 games as they dwell in 15th, on 10 points from 22 games.
