The Uganda Premier League encounter between KCCA FC and Vipers SC couldn’t have come at the right time, when the latter qualified for the group stages of the CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.
Vipers achieved the feat on Saturday, seven days to their visit to Lugogo to take on KCCA on Saturday, October 22.
The two subject matters are the talk around town with either side’s faithful arguing that their team is the best including the latter’s patron, Lord Mayor of Kampala Erias Lukwago.
“I want to congratulate our friends of Vipers for achieving such a milestone,” Lukwago said at the launch of KCCA’s new shirt sponsor CHINT Electric at Mestil Hotel on Monday.
“But, KCCA remains the best club in this country in almost every aspect and we just need to improve in a few areas and we are going to do that.”
“They have emulated what we have done in the past, meaning it is us that set the tone in the first place.”
“Vipers should embrace themselves that they will be playing at a stage where we belong and the club’s main focus is to win titles and return to the continent,” he added.
KCCA played in the group stages of Africa’s greatest club football showpiece in 2018 while Vipers’ appearance will be in 2023 after eliminating powerhouse TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Although KCCA has been around for a while competing with the other traditional best clubs SC Villa and Express FC, on the other hand, Vipers’ show up is recent.
The Kitende-based outfit has won four UPL titles in the past decade while KCCA has clinched five and it’s fair enough to regard them as the best two clubs in Uganda currently.
