Kampala Capital City Authority Football Club (KCCA FC) have agreed to mutually terminate the contract of Nigerian striker John Odumegwu.
Odumegwu joined the club in June 2019 from Nigeria’s Rivers United, but leaves after just a year into his two-year contract.
“KCCA FC and John Egbuonu Odumegwu have mutually agreed to part ways. The Nigerian forward signed a two years contract in September 2019 but has served only one year,” the club said in a statement.
Odumegwu was signed by the club as a replacement for departing Patrick Kaddu, with his imposing physique seen as an attribute the Kasasiro Boys can use as an alternative plan to their approach.
But he has largely failed to impress at the StarTimes Stadium, Lugogo, featuring in only 13 league game – mostly as a substitute, starting just five times.
He scored just one goal for the club in all competitions which came against Maroons FC in October 2019 as KCCA picked up a 3-1 victory in Luzira.
His time at KCCA was defined by the saga he had at his apartment in Mutungo Biina, which involved three girls who reported to Police that they were ‘held against their will’ by the striker.
The girls said to be students at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Nakawa were invited to the residence by the Nigerian, but when they asked to leave, he confiscated their phones and stopped them from leaving.
They sought for help and when Police intervened, the striker was taken into custody before he was produced in court for trial.
However, the case was dropped after the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence, with Odumegwu allowed to return to the club who didn’t intervene saying ‘they will let the law take its course’.
Odumegwu started his career with Ifeanyi Uba FC in Nigeria in 2015 and he later moved to Warri Wolves FC in 2016 where he put up a massive performance in the Nigerian Premier League.
He later caught the eye of Plateau FC in 2017 where he spent a short stint before moving to Rivers United FC.
He was part of the Rivers team that played against KCCA in the 2018 Confederations Cup and provided an assist in both the home and away ties which persuaded the club to pursuit him.
