Umaru Kasumba was rested as his side, Sofapaka returned to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Western Stima on Wednesday at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
Kepha Aswani opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when he latched onto a loose ball inside the area before firing past Stima goalkeeper Samuel Odhiambo.
Five minutes later, John Avire made it 2-0 with a looping header that beat Odhiambo in Stima’s goal posts to add to Batoto Va Mungu’s lead.
Stima showed improvement after the break but they threw away the half chances they created and in the end lost the match.
Sofapaka coach John Baraza was impressed with his side’s performance in the match.
“It was a good game especially coming from Sunday’s draw. The boys showed hunger from the first to the last minute and I am happy with the outcome,” he said.
On the decision to rest Kasumba, Baraza said the knock the Ugandan forward picked against Tusker is the reason he decided to bench the inform forward.
“He picked an injury against Tusker and that’s why I opted to let him have a day off today. He was in a situation where he could play but because we have matches ahead, we decided to let him have some deserved rest,” he added.
Sofapaka’s next league outing will be against log leaders Gor Mahia on May 12th before visiting Nzoia Sugar six days later.
