Gomba knocked out Busiro from the 2020 Airtel Masaza Cup with a 5-4 victory after penalty shootouts following a goalless 90 minutes on Thursday, at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.

Substitute goalkeeper Peter Katongole produced the decisive moment, saving from Malida Kuteesa’s effort to send his side to their first appearance in the final since 2017.

Busiro had two great chances to go ahead early on, Usama Arafat failing to beat goalkeeper Anguzu Francis in the ninth minute, while Gerrard Ogweti also squandered a chance after 20 minutes.

Isaac Musiima’s corner nearly caught out Busiro goalkeeper Mutumba Adadi but the keeper was quick to react and tip the ball over the bar.

Ogweti was again at fault in the 63rd minute, after he failed to connect with Usama’s cut back as the game saw few chances for either team afterwards.

Both coaches had time to pull one peculiar final tactic as the game was headed for penalty kicks, both teams introducing goalkeepers for the spot-kicks.

Busiro introduced Juma Kirabira for Mutumba while Katongole took Anguzu’s place.

Katongole’s substitution paid off as he saved from Busiro’s first kicker, Kuteesa. However, he was beaten by Adriko, Kasule, Ogweti and Desty Mubiru’s efforts.

Meanwhile, Charles Bbale, George Kiryowa, Hamis Kafeero, Derrick Bbowa and Derrick Ssentongo all beat Kirabira.

Gomba will be looking at winning a record fifth Masaza Cup crown and the first since they defeated Ssingo in 2017 final. Busiro were chasing their second consecutive appearance in the final.

This year’s Masaza Cup was moved to a bubble inside Njeru after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic stopped it from having its usual home and away format.
