Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tony Mawejje intends to set up a football academy specialized in nurturing midfielders.

However, his decision has left many pondering what exactly the retired footballer is all about.

“As far as I am concerned, the midfield is my area of expertise when it comes to football,” Mawejje told Footbal256 in an interview.

“I do not at any point intended to do a football team never so my specialisation in setting up a midfielders academy should not confuse people.”

“Stop worrying about how they will play because what I am targeting are the basics of a good midfielder, take them through all the phases.”

“Through that kind of process, I am optimistic that good midfielders are going to be produced and gradually they will start getting attached to different clubs.”

“It is going to be the first of its kind but I know it is also going to inspire a lot of other retired players to start specialising in developing talent depending on their positions,” he noted.

The academy will be based in Masaka where Mawejje hails from but it will also have a branch in Kampala.

“I was born and raised in Masaka and it is where my football story started from so the academy will be based there.”

“But we shall also have a branch in Kampala because for the largest part of my life I have stayed here.”

“We shall be picking kids from all over the country and take them to Masaka and later Kampala for further development,” Mawejje stated.

Following his retirement from active football at the end of the 2021/22 season, Mawejje will have two testimonials games on September 14th and 16th, 2022.

The games will be played between the current Uganda Cranes squad and the 2017 Cranes AFCON squad at Lugogo and Masaka Recreation Center respectively.

Entrance fees will be 20,000/= and 50,000/= for the general and VIP tickets respectively at Lugogo while 10,000/= will be paid in Masaka.

“The funds collected from the testimonial games will help us to have a starting point as far as the academy is concerned.”

“Once we begin I am optimistic that support from different sources will keep on coming to push the project,” Mawejje concluded.

Having started his career at a young age at Masaka Local Council FC, Mawejje went on to play for a host of teams in Uganda and abroad.

By the time the 83-capped former Cranes player called it time on his career, he had returned from overseas and playing for Police FC.
