KCCA FC legend Jackson ‘Mia Mia’ Mayanja has called on authorities to give the Uganda Premier League trophy to Express FC after the season was halted with four games to play.
The move by FUFA to indefinitely stop the league followed the presidential directive that suspended all sports activities in the country after a sharp surge in coronavirus cases.
At the time of the suspension, Express were the table leaders on 58 points ahead of second-placed URA SC on 57 and champions Vipers SC with 56 points in third.
Mayanja who believes resuming the league risks the lives of Ugandans and the players has called on FUFA to have a look at the laws governing the game and thus award the trophy to Express.
“It is risky to resume the league because it’s very hard to stop the fans from watching the games. So the lives of the players and Ugandans will be in danger,” he told Football256 in an exclusive interview.
“I think FUFA should check the laws and give it(the trophy) to Express as it was done last season(to Vipers). It is the right thing to do and they deserve it,” he added.
It should be noted that last season suffered a similar blow with five games to play and consequently Vipers who were top with 54 points ahead of KCCA on 50 were crowned champions.
Mayanja who quit as Kyetume FC coach days before the current suspension of the league insists that it is fair enough that the teams in the relegation zone suffer a similar fate as the ones in the 2019/20 season.
“Last season, Maroons and Proline suffered the same thing. The teams in the relegation zone should also go down because we cannot afford to risk lives unless people concerned are ready to suffer the consequences,” he added.
Last season, Tooro United (22), Proline (22) and Maroons FC (24) did not get the chance to fight further for their stay in the top tier as FUFA condemned them down in the Big League as they invoked Article 18 of the sporting regulations.
This could be the case with Kyetume FC (23) who still have a chance to oust Busoga United (26) from the 13th position.
