The Federation of Uvanda Football Association has shockingly asked Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry to step aside from his duty for the next one month.

McKinstry who has been at the helm of Uganda’s senior national team since September 2019 has been temporarily relieved of his duties effective March 2 and is expected to return to office on March 31.

The development comes ahead of crucial Uganda Cranes preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Malawi in March.

McKinstry’s assistants Abdallah Mubiru, Livingstone Mbabazi and goalkeeping coach Fred Kajoba who was suspended from duty ahead of January’s CHAN finals will take temporary charge of the team.

The decision was made by the FUFA Executive Committee following their meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

“The FUFA Executive Committee has asked the head coach of the national senior side; the Uganda Cranes Johnathan McKinstry to step aside from managing and coaching the team for the period from March 2 – 31 2021,” FUFA said in a statement.

“In the meantime assistant coaches Abdallah Mubiru, Livingstone Mbabazi and goalkeeping coach Fred Kajoba will take charge of the team during this period.”

“The rest of the Technical team remains unchanged. FUFA will use the period to assess and monitor the performance of the team,” the statement added.

Mubiru and Mbabazi will have their work cut out to once again oversee Cranes’ qualification for a major continental championship after the pair guided Uganda to qualification for the 2021 CHAN finals.

Uganda sit second in their AFCON qualifying group B on seven points behind Burkina Faso who they host on March 22 before they travel to Malawi for their final AFCON qualifier.
