Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango took Ugandans by surprise when he posted on Twitter on Thursday, suggesting that he had come out of retirement. “Uganda Cranes guess who is back?”

Ugandans reacted differently to the development with the majority excited whereas some did not welcome the news.

“Oh my God I can see Uganda at the World (Cup) of 48 teams,” Rodney Reigns responded to Onyango’s post.

“It was hard accepting that you had put down the tools on the side of the national team. But again we moved on now trying to improve the likes of Salim Jamal Magoola and the other goalkeeper(s). But if you are back then we won’t improve. Better you come back in a different role,” Silver Samuel noted.

Nzadi Kato said: “Tell me you mean it because the armband was missing you.”

“You can enjoy your retirement well and leave opportunities for the other upcoming stars to shine too the likes of Ismail Watenga, Salim Jamal, and Charles Lukwago what you did was enough sir,” Robert Kenneth Tugume stated.

“We appreciate what you did for the Cranes, but let me hope you will give the lads time, you should be a goalkeeping coach,” Joel Oluka said.

“Too much of everything is always bad former captain. With no doubt, you are Uganda’s best goalkeeper of all time. But you practicing selfishness now. There are so many young talents that have always waited for their time to represent this nation but you are now becoming an obstacle,” Ivan Kizito noted.

The 37-year-old called it time on his national team career in April 2021, soon after the Uganda Cranes failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Although many continuously contemplated that it was a forced decision, Onyango has always said that it was his individual decision.

The Mamelodi Sundowns captain is in his native country Uganda for a holiday. However, efforts to understand more about the latest development from the horse’s mouth by this reporter did not yield anything.
